IMPATIENCE & PRIDE:
The Relationship Between The Two
“By pride comes nothing but strife, But with the well-advised is wisdom.” (Proverbs 13:10)
When abiding in pride, it becomes so much more likely that we find ourselves laughing at others who do not appear to know the things that we know. In fact, even children emulate this trait on the playground of life; provoking them to become bullies who are constantly looking for an excuse to humiliate others. This can readily be avoided if we come to know this precept in God’s Word. And even children can certainly be taught this important lesson, that they must learn patience, especially when it comes to the competitive nature of educational settings.
When we abide in pride, our attitude is one of superiority; we wonder, ‘Is this person stupid? Why can’t he/she understand?’ Consequently, we develop an attitude of arrogance, which leads directly to a condescending tone in our speech. This is not pleasing to God, quite clearly. It is hurtful and causes nothing but emotional pain and dysfunction in every sort of relationship: familial relationships, co-workers and all sorts of friendships.
In order to develop patience, we must first allow the Holy Spirit to do His Work within us; we must forgo the selfish pride that wars against every one of us, and surrender to His Will. We can learn to use our will to choose His Will. Even if it’s a long and painful process, through surrender we can come to the end of ourselves and to the point of letting God be God in our lives, and thus, avoid allowing impatience to lead to lashing out at others in anger.
James 1:3—
“knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”
Proverbs 14:29—
“He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, But he who is impulsive exalts folly.”
1Corinthians 4:6-7—
"Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other. For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?"
Proverbs 13:10
"By pride comes nothing but strife,
But with the well-advised is wisdom."
Colossians 3:12-15
"Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful."
