MOMMA'S FAMILY-FAMOUS SAYINGS:
Honoring God For The Wisdom He Bestows on Mothers: Sunday School Lesson
“Your sister just called me a dumbbell,” Marie whispered in my ear.
“IF you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all,” our mother hollered out the window at my sister, as we continued playing in our front yard with our cousins Marie and Victor, who lived down the street.
“How do you suppose she knew to look out, and stick her ear out the window at that exact moment?” I asked in Marie’s ear. Marie just shrugged her shoulders, and giggled a little. Then, later that afternoon, our brother Richie joined us in the front yard, and suddenly no one was enjoying the game anymore. “Ahhhhhh…..Why did you have to come out here Rich? We were playing just fine until came around!” Our sister shouted.
“Yeah Rich, just go back in the house!” We all screamed at him. Then, our mother was at the window again. “You kids just wait until your father gets home and I tell him how mean you were to your little brother today!” She said, with disgust.
“You have to treat others the way you want to be treated,” she lectured, when we came inside for dinner. Marie came in too, because our mother invited her to stay for dinner. Victor didn’t seem interested, and went back down the street by himself. “Wow, your mom sure has a lot of sayings!” Marie said to me when we were alone for a few minutes. “You got that right!” I replied. “But, I think it’s cool how she gets her point across! I wonder if other mom use those sayings too though,” I added. “Actually she has even more of them now than she did before....... She says things like, “Two wrongs don’t make a right, Practice makes perfect, If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again, oh and my personal favorite, “Don’t tell your father!” Marie laughed.
My mother doesn’t say any of those things! And it’s usually me and Victor begging our mom not to tell dad about the stuff we do!” She added. "I mean, she does a lot of great things like........ she makes great meatloaf, and she always takes good care of us when we're sick, and she always has the best advice, that always gets me outta lots of trouble....." 'So, Marie's mother doesn't say these things to her and Victor,' I thought. 'Hmmmmm....' That night as I lay in bed, I wondered if my mother’s family famous sayings were known by any other moms, or did God give her some sort of special gift or something (?).
Then one day when Marie and I were playing Barbie dolls on her front porch, I surprised Marie with something special of my own. "I've been wondering if my mom is the only one who says these cool and interesting things.......Anyway, I made up a funny rhyme about some of my favorites......You wanna hear?" Marie nodded madly. "Okay, here goes..... MOMA'S FAMILY FAMOUS SAYINGS! My sister and I know our mom’s sayings well, and we really do try to follow them each day, but it’s not so easy when we fuss and fight, because mom always has to remind us, “You can’t always have your own way!” "Let each of you look out not for his own interest but also for the interest of others." (Philippians 2:4) “You have to treat others the way you want to be treated!” She shouts out the window when our fights make one of us cry, “And what would happen if I didn’t stick out my ear, and with my great big eyes, I didn’t spy? "Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to the, for this is the Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 7:12) And, when I call my sister mean names when she loses and goes home with her ball, later on our mom always says, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then just don’t you say anything at all!” "A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness." (Proverbs 15:1-2) And when we all have fits because the things we do do not turn out just right, our mother always says, “Practice makes perfect, so resist the urge to quit with all your might!” "Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life much the Lord has promised to those who love Him." (James 1:12) And, when she can’t find us, and doesn’t know what to do, when before dinner, too far do we roam, she says my most favorite mom saying of all, oh, you kids! just you wait till your father gets home! "If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?" (Hebrews 12:7) “And, you kids know that two wrongs don’t make a right, and there’s nothing you can say to make me change my mind, “and besides that, you know there's a way to stick up for yourself, without becoming the least bit unkind!” "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2Timothy 3:16-17) "But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also." (Matthew 5:39) And I always know what she’s gonna say those times when I get mad, and say things she doesn’t like; “If at first you don’t succeed try, try, again, because someday you will ride that brand new bike! "But you, be strong and do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded!" (2Chronicles 15:7) Mom’s family sayings are always true and right, and there's a funny one she keeps for those times that to our dad, she doesn’t want us to say, “Kids, please don’t tell your father the silly things that went on here today? OKAY?" "And above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins." (1Peter 4:8) NKJV
